Two models of Doc's Proplugs are available, Vented (with a hole) and Solid (without a hole).
Vented models allow pressure equalization while diving and allows the human voice to be heard, yet it keeps water from washing out precious ear wax.
The Vented attenuates 20dB of high frequencies to provide protection for musicians, light industry users and in-cabin flight attendants, but allows normal voice frequencies to pass with less muffling. Use for surfing, kayaking and other water sports..
The Solid or non-vented model can be used after myringotomies (insertion of ventilation tubes) and with perforated eardrums (with physician's approval). Use Non-Vented for swimming or bathing.
Ventilation Tubes
Persons with middle ear fluid (serious otitis media) may need to have their middle ear continuously drained by the insertion of a hollow plastic tube through the eardrum. Doc's Proplugs, when fitted properly, keep most but not all water and debris (bacteria) out of the ear canal. An ear surgeon should monitor the patient's ear and may advise the instillation of 2-3 drops of antibiotic solution in the canal after each exposure to water. Solid (non-vented) Doc's Proplugs are suggested for those with eardrum damage that are likely to forget to stay on the surface. Please note that soap and shampoo will also lower the surface tension. After tube insertion, patients should wear the Doc's Proplugs while showering and shampooing.
